Head Coach & Mini Soccer Lead - Wayne Phillips

Role Purpose
The Academy Lead for younger mini soccer teams is essential in shaping the foundation of young players’ experience within the club. Their aim is to create a nurturing, positive, and fun environment where children can begin to develop their football abilities, teamwork, and love for the game. The Academy Lead ensures all programmes for these early ages align with the club’s philosophy, making player well-being and enjoyment the top priorities.
Key Responsibilities
Age-Appropriate Programme Leadership
Design and deliver a curriculum tailored to younger age groups, prioritising play, skill development, and enjoyment over competition.
Ensure the learning environment is safe, inclusive, and supportive for all children, regardless of skill or background.
Monitor and adapt training sessions to suit the developmental stages of children, focusing on basic motor skills, coordination, and confidence.
Early Player Development
Introduce fundamental football skills in a way that is engaging and accessible to young players.
Encourage personal growth, teamwork, and positive social interactions on and off the pitch.
Regularly observe and gently assess player progress, providing constructive feedback to support each child’s development.
Parent and Guardian Engagement
Foster strong, open communication with parents and guardians, helping them understand the club’s approach to learning and development at the mini soccer stage.
Offer guidance for supporting children’s participation, enjoyment, and well-being at home and during sessions.
Staff and Volunteer Guidance
Support and mentor coaches and volunteers working with mini soccer teams, ensuring consistent delivery of the club’s youth development philosophy.
Organise training and resources for staff and volunteers to help them create a safe, encouraging environment for young players.
Safeguarding and Welfare
Ensure all safeguarding policies are strictly followed to protect the welfare of every participant.
Maintain awareness of each child’s physical and emotional well-being, acting promptly and sensitively to any concerns.
By focussing on the youngest age groups, the Academy Lead lays the groundwork for lifelong involvement in football—nurturing not only future talent, but also a passion for the game, positive character, and a strong sense of belonging from the very start.
